Chapter Twelve

My gaze roamed around the cafeteria—good, no Liz. We took our shots.

“Are you hungry?” Sophie asked.

“I’m so hungry I could eat a horse!” We both burst out laughing.

We went to table four and joined the girls for dinner. Neither one of us said anything about Liz.

The day ended too soon. After dinner, we huddled around the campfire. A counselor escorted Liz to the group. We sang the FSC song and danced around the fire, then walked back to our cabin, without Liz, and got ready for bed.

About twenty minutes before the nine-thirty “lights-out,” the door opened and in Liz walked.

“Good night, Elizabeth,” the counselor said and closed the door.

Without a look, she went to her chest, pulled out her pajamas and hairbrush, and went to the shower. A few minutes later, she came out and got into her cot. Her eyes were red again. What’s wrong with her?

The lights went out. I was so tired. I went right to sleep.

The next morning, the bugle startled me awake. Liz had already gone.

Rebekah, Sophie, and I went to the game room and played video games. Then we went swimming and later saw a puppet show.

We made plans to go horseback riding. I remembered Liz’s flash of interest.

“Come and walk with me to the cabin,” I said to Sophie and Rebekah. “I want to do something.” I thought. Liz might be in the cabin.

“We’ll wait for you by the flagpole,” said Rebekah. “We can see you.”

“Okay. I’ll be back.” I headed for our cabin.

When I opened the door, I heard quiet sobbing. Wendy was sitting on Liz’s cot with her arm around her shoulder.

“Why are you crying?” I asked Liz.

“Liz is having a hard time,” Wendy said.

“What’s wrong?” I sat down beside Liz.

“I want to go horseback riding and I’m not allowed to.” Liz’s voice shook. “’Cause I don’t have any hiking boots. I can only go to the areas where there are no pebbles or small rocks. It’s no fun being cooped up like a baby.”

I felt bad for her. “Didn’t you read the list of clothing that you were supposed to bring to camp? Why didn’t you bring boots?”

“Yeah, I read the list.” Liz wiped away tears. “I thought if I didn’t bring them, Mom would take me back home. I didn’t want to come to this old camp. She said I wasn’t going back home, and I had to stay in the areas where I didn’t have to wear hard shoes. That’s no fun.”

“I have a pair of hiking boots that I’ll let you borrow.”

“Portia, that’s so nice of you,” Wendy said.

“Why?” Liz shot a long hard look at me. “Why would you do that? You don’t even like me. The other girls hate me too.”

I shrugged. “I know you want to have a good time, and I don’t want to be mean to you.” I walked over to my chest and pulled out the hiking boots.

“Come here and try them on. They have shoestrings, so if they’re too big, we can tie them tight, but if they’re too small, I can’t help you.
